Doctor Myles Munroe said that where purpose is not known, abuse is inevitable. When we apply this truth to everything that men are, everything that men do and everything that is wrong with men, we begin to realise the depth of the truth that Dr. Myles was telling us.

Since the beginning of time, man has not understood his role in terms of being a man and therefore his role as a father. I believe that this lack of understanding lies at the heart of the many problems that our families, communities and nation is experiencing. We can go back to any of the social challenges, the breakdown of the family unit for example, and trace it back to fatherhood and how men do not fulfil the role as father as that role was originally intended to be fulfilled. When we look at the failures in government, in business and in society at large, we see that at the heart of the failures in business, government, society and even in the church, men stand accused. Men who fail to accept responsibility and accountability. Men without integrity and character.

They do not know, nor do they understand; They walk about in darkness; All the foundations of the earth are unstable. Psalms 82:5 NKJV

The word understand or understanding appears more than 250 times in the Bible and more often in Proverbs. This repetition of the word means that God wants to show its importance to us as human beings in living a successful life. Because He wants us to be successful and to prosper.

It is no wonder that David says in Psalm 82:5 – they do not know, nor do they understand, they walk about in darkness and all the foundations of the earth are therefore unstable. One of the core intents of God was that man should be the foundation on which the family, society and everything else is built. So when the foundations are unstable, we see the breakdown and failures that are rooted in men who don’t know and men who don’t understand.

In Proverbs 3:5 we are told to trust God and not depend on our OWN understanding and again in Proverbs 4:7 we are told that of all the things we get, we must get or prioritize understanding.

In the past couple of weeks I spoke about this but last night I was reminded of its importance again as I read about the purpose of man and fatherhood. Hence David says we – as fathers – know nothing, we don’t understand – our purpose – and therefore the foundation of the earth is unstable. To the MEN reading this, let us pray and ask God for His wisdom and understanding to fill our heart, soul and mind so that we know and  understand our purpose. Let us ask God to fix our vision according to His purpose for our lives.
